Interview do's and don'ts
When you are looking for a new job or a change in career there comes a point where you will have to do a job interview. But how does that work and what do you need to do and what not. In this blog I will tell you everything about the do's and don'ts during your next job interview!
Let's start with the do's:
This will help you be prepared so you know what you are talking about and what the interviewer might ask. When you have read up about the position and the company, you will come to the interview prepared. The company will notice this and this will give off a good/interested impression.
There are a few interview questions that are used very often, if you practice these questions you will be prepared for when they ask them and you get a feeling of what interview questions look like and how to approach them. (see list below for common asked interview questions)
When you have a job interview it is important that you listen to what the interviewer says exactly and what the interviewer asks so that you can respond accordingly. This will help you really understand the question and then giving a good full answer.
Respond to questions with examples this will demonstrate your experience and give the company a better picture of your personality, former experiences and solutions.
Show interest in the company by asking questions, maintaining eye contact and with open body language. This will give the interviewer the feeling that you are truly interested in the company and want to start working there.
Dress in a professional manner this will make a good first impression. It is like they say “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”.
Ask the company to clarify a question if you did not understand it. This will show confidence and it gives you the chance to properly answer the question. Otherwise you can give an answer that does not correspond with the question.
Turn of your cellphone in order to prevent getting a call or text that will interrupt the interview. Keeping your cellphone on will only distract you.
Continuing with the don´ts:
Being late will give a bad first impression and the chances are big that the interviewer does not take you seriously from that moment on. Therefor it is important to be on time and already show your time management skills.
When having an online interview make sure you have a quiet place where you can do the interview without any interruptions. Sitting in a crowdy area will be distracting and come across as unprofessional.
Even if you have a question, wait until the interviewer is done speaking to ask it. Interrupting the interviewer can come across as rude and give a bad impression. Even if you interrupt the interviewer out of excitement it can annoy the interviewer. So try to pay attention to this.
Even though you need to highlight your strengths during an interview you should not dismiss your weaknesses, be honest about them. Tell the interviewer how you deal with them and overcome them. Everyone has weaknesses so it is better to acknowledge and tackle them then to ignore them.
Be confident and embrace the accomplishments that you made and the strengths that you have. Do not be humble, show your strengths and talk about them so that the interviewer can really capture what you have to offer.
Give the interviewer a more elaborate answer. If you only answer a question with yes or no the interviewer will not really get to know you or your strengths which is necessary in order to let them see all that you have to offer.
Be honest during the interview and do not lie or exaggerate this will only give you more trouble. Be honest and sincere this will come across, the interviewer will see it when you are honest and value this.
To help you be better prepared for the interview here a list of common asked interview questions that you can practice with:
Tell me more about yourself?
Why did you apply for this position?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What can you bring to the company?
How do you handle stressful situations?

Hopefully these do`s, don`ts and interview questions will help you with your next job interview. Read them, use them and be prepared. Good luck with your next job interview!
